central races

The term “central races” is often used to refer collectively to the humanoid races which found themselves on the victorious side of the conflicts of The Second Age. Traditionally it refers to Humans, Dwarves, Elves, Halflings and Gnomes (excluding any Underdark subraces), but in The Third Age the term has been going through an adjustment, in that in also includes Dragonborn, Tieflings, and hybrids of other central races, such as Half-Orcs.

In other words, it’s an in-setting term to refer to most of the playable races from the Player’s Handbook (Drow being the exception.)

Though they aren’t a seperate race, Wild Elves are usually not considered to be part of the central races, as they were one of the enemies of the central races during The Second Age.
